Wtf is Android Device (Not Medium App)?

Can we get an explanation please, because this feels like a scam

Aside from usual dregs of feeling continually bummed about my Medium statistics, I’ve come to notice a recurring trend in my few articles that somehow achieve popularity, and that is THEY STILL DON’T MAKE ME MONEY. This has become so commonplace, I am beginning to be suspicious of its authenticity. Surely I can’t be the only one believing something sly is going on here.

What I’m talking about, is the category of referrals in an article’s statistics, known only as “Android Device (Not Medium App).”

Several of my recent articles have achieved some form of viral traffic. But each one of them, the majority of that traffic is being listed as “Android Device (Not Medium App).” I am beginning to believe this is a little too convenient.

Firstly, this category only began showing up around the time of major site updates, and coincidentally when the big Medium Writer’s Challenge results were announced. Hmmm. Weird. Medium doles out over $100k to a few writers, and suddenly the majority of writers here notice a steep decline in their earnings. Crazy!

Secondly, why is it pinpointing that the traffic is outside the Medium App at all? The use of the Medium app should be completely…
