The Times My Mother Laughed The Hardest

My mother has an infectious laugh. She’s one of those people who can get tickled and start laughing, and in no time an entire room of people are caught up in the moment, laughing either with her or at the hilarity of the scene. Throughout my memory there are moments that I can look back on where this happened, or where I can recall her sheer joy, and it never fails to make me smile.

In the following sections I have tried to capture a few of these memories. I hope that you’re smiling along with me as you read them.

Babies Can Be Dangerous

My little brother was the source of much laughter when I was growing up. I keenly remember how the first time I held him, as a newborn, he let rip the loudest fart you can imagine escaping a baby’s bottom. I was holding a baby, I wasn’t expecting him to rattle and vibrate my hands with escaping gases.

This startled me so much I nearly tossed him from my lap. Luckily we were sitting on a bed at the time. My mother and my sister both thought this was so hilarious, they were laughing until tears streamed down their cheeks. This instance earned my baby brother the nickname of “pooter,” which he had to bear for much of his preadolescent life. His actual name being…
