The problem with this comment is I didn’t need Nabokov to show me anything. I already know pedophilia is vile. I’m a survivor of a home that had a sexual predator in it for a while. Though I was not myself victimized physically, I bear many psychological scars. I definitely didn’t need to read this book to understand anything about it. Also, it only repulses you if the notion of pedophilia repulses you. If you see yourself in Humbert, there’s no question a reader would sympathize with the writing. That’s a huge problem, not to mention all the other negative ways this text has been co-opted through the years to the degradation of keeping this pedophiliac sexualization of the young pushed to the fringes of society. It’s inexcusable.
