Respecting Elliot Page Hurts Exactly Nobody
Dear offended human,
Elliot Page being a trans man does not hurt you in any way. Why does it bother you? Stop being small minded and closed off from ideas outside your own experience. The world is a large place, and there is room for everyone to live within it, and pursue their own version of happiness. There is room for literally a limitless variety of perspectives.
Elliot Page isn’t asking you to stop being you. He is asking you to let him be him.
It’s that easy. Why are you trying to make it difficult? Why do you care about how another person wants to be identified? Why are you so opposed to letting someone else be comfortable in their own existence? How does their comfort cause you discomfort in any way?
The answer is, it doesn’t.
What? You want to make an argument about biology now? About biological identity? As if that should really factor into it? All you are doing is putting a faux scientific consideration over the skull of your own inconsiderate and immovable psychological framework. Elliot Page isn’t asking you to change your understanding of biology. Elliot Page isn’t asking you to change your own biology. Elliot Page merely wants to be treated with respect and considered his own person, and he wants to be acknowledged as the person he is. Not the person you thought he was. The person he is.
Is it beyond your ability to be asked to remember someone’s name? Is it beyond your ability to be asked to remember someone’s preference in how they are referred to? To simply say the word he or him instead of the word she or her? This literally requires the bare minimum of effort, the bare minimum of considerate thought, the bare minimum of respect. Doesn’t every person deserve at least the bare minimum of thought, consideration, and respect?
Do you want to know how easy it is to do this? Look at how quickly Elliot Page’s announcement was acknowledged within the industry he works. His information and profiles across platforms such as IMDB and Netflix were updated within hours of his going public. It wasn’t met with even a modicum of debate or pushback. It was just accepted and the world moved on. Because, again, it boils down to respecting individual experiences, individual identities, and individual rights. It boils down to kindness and understanding. It boils down to empathy.
There are exactly zero arguments that you can make against being a kind and considerate person. There are exactly zero arguments that you can make against respecting your fellow human beings and their rights to live without fear of being themselves. There are exactly zero arguments that you can make against allowing someone else to be happy. Your arguments have no basis in reality. They’re stuck in the past or in superstition. You need to stop being an asshole.
You want to bring up your religion now? Where in the Bible is the word trans even listed? What makes you think your version of God cares about this issue? What makes you think you have the right to force these religious predilections and presuppositions onto everyone else, including those who may not share your religious perspective? Again, how on Earth does Elliot Page being Elliot Page have any impact on your personal belief system? Your god would tell you to stop being an asshole.
Elliot Page is Elliot Page, and in the grand scheme of the world, virtually nothing major has changed. If anything, Elliot has just used his platform to give others some courage and some strength. To show those out there like him that they are not alone, and they have every right to come forward and be themselves, to ask the world to see them for who they are. If Elliot Page can stand literally before millions of people and reveal his true identity, under the intensity and scrutiny of the media gaze, it tells others their own smaller versions of ridicule are easier hurdles to leap, that their own versions of fear are just mere matters of overcoming self doubt, and if Elliot can do it, they can do it.
Elliot Page is a trans man. Elliot Page is now a man. Saying that affects my own life in zero ways. Acknowledging that will not hurt you. But choosing to ignore it or purposefully and willfully cling to his former name and gender could actively cause him pain. And why would anyone want to actively cause another person pain? There’s not a valid excuse for hurting someone who only wants to live their life and enjoy the same freedoms as everyone else.
Let Elliot Page live his life. Let Elliot Page be Eliot Page. Don’t be an asshole.
This is not complicated.
It’s literally that easy.
