Disney Can’t Let Boba Fett Be Himself
Lego announced the removal of the ship’s name from their merchandise this week
In perhaps the stupidest example yet of revisionism, Disney has instructed Lego to remove the title of Boba Fett’s ship from all future merchandise. It seems that the previous name of the ship, Slave-1, might be considered offensive, because of the word “slave.” Disney apparently told Lego that they want to avoid any negative connotations of the word “slave” with Boba Fett, or their property.
While Disney has yet to make any formal statement about this, it’s hard to believe that Lego reps would go on record with the press regarding this matter if what they were saying didn’t hold water. They’re saying that Boba Fett’s ship is getting retconned because they’re afraid of offending someone, despite this issue being literally the least likely thing to offend ANYONE.
Instead, the announcement of this name change, likely coming purposely before the impending release of the new Disney series The Book of Boba Fett, has offended the precious fanbase. It has also offended one of the original actors who portrayed Boba Fett in the first Star Wars trilogy, Mark Anthony Austin, who portrayed the character in the Special Edition of A New Hope.
