Death & Commas

If it’s all about Death
and commas,
then who is listening
to the sparrow’s songs?

Spilled dirt and loose
severed petals,
signify a separation,
but from what?

Who knows the reason
a certain scent
of vanilla or spruce
works like a vise

on the tear ducts?
The poet notices
how light seems like magic
that reduces gravity,

allows mosquitos and dragonflies
to dance across the water,
flirting with fish mouths
the way poets flirt with words.
